Canon: Fairy Tail
Canon Point: Chapter 382 – after being sealed by Alegria
Background: "Ice can even stop the time of life itself. So, you'll never be able to catch up, for eternity. You'll always be stuck there, staring at the fairy's tail."
Personality:
Generally serious and levelheaded – a cool and blunt person, as his character profile in the Fairy Tail Monthly Magazine describes him – Gray carries all typical attributes of a Fairy Tail mage in his heart. He is stubborn, passionate, loyal to a fault and though he tends to comment on the impossibility of some of Natsu and Erza’s schemes, he is still pretty eccentric in his own way.
Originally motivated to learn magic by the death of his parents to the demon Deliora, Gray was driven – very near consumed – by the thought of learning enough magic to defeat him and take his revenge. He was reckless enough to seek Deliora out, when he discovered the demon's whereabouts about a year or two after starting his training. However the sacrifice of his teacher Ur did indeed 'seal his darkness' as it was her intention. Ever since he has tried to be aware of the consequences to his actions. Even so, while the events of the Garluna Island arc allowed Gray to make peace with his fellow apprentice Lyon and also his own guilt over Ur’s death, Deliora has been proven to remain a source of trauma to Gray that affects him to the present day, especially if enough reminders hit at once. Similarly, Ur remains a source of inspiration and comfort to him.
Gray has been a member of Fairy Tail for at very least eight to nine years (15+ as of the time skip) and is utterly loyal to the guild and all its members, no matter how well he knows them or how long they have been part of the guild. If someone is part of the guild, he will do anything and everything to defend or help them, should it be required of him. He declared as much out loud when the guild was attacked by Phantom Lord and Juvia (then of Phantom Lord) demanded him to hand over Lucy ("Sorry, but it doesn't matter if you're a woman or even a child. I don't go easy on anybody who hurts my comrades.", "Lucy's our comrade. I won't hand her over even if I die.").
Despite his usually serious and laid back manner, Gray is more than capable of getting fired up and competitive when challenged, especially if Natsu is around. The two of them share a fierce and but friendly rivalry, that might seem like mutual dislike (probably caused by them wielding opposing elements - ice and fire, respectively - as noted by Lucy and Erza). Even so they are very important to each other, Natsu telling Gray off when he considers sacrificing himself in order to defeat Lyon and later Deliora and Gray getting Natsu out of various tight spots such as when he was swallowed by Fukuro in the Tower of Paradise arc.
He has a similar close relationship to Erza, though that one is more motivated by fear than rivalry, as she has beaten him up several times in the past when he behaves in a way she considers inappropriate (ie. fighting Natsu, running around in his underwear, ect). However, he is far from afraid to speak his mind to her, if he considers the matter important – going as far as to dare her to cut him down where he stands.
While usually calm, seemingly arrogant in battle - mouthing off rather crudely no matter what opponent - his temper still tends to show, especially when his comrades are threatened or Fairy Tail, one of his comrades or Ur are insulted (or when Deliora is brought up). He shows the same boundless determination as all members of his guild, standing up and fighting even – or maybe especially – when he should be well beyond his limits.
Gray does in most cases use his head before rushing into a fight – he has stated several times that creation magic is a magic that requires strategy and imagination; as such it’s a magic that requires creativity of him to apply it in the most befitting manner. Out of all members of Team Natsu he is quite possible the most likely to think strategic and act accordingly (for example, he was the first to realize that the quickest way to stopping Erigor from using the mass murder flute Lullaby in the Oshibana Train Station would be to intercept him in the loudspeaker system’s control room).
He tries very hard to approach difficult situations with caution and a level head, and will absolutely act underhanded if required, such as listening in on Lucy and Cana to solve the riddle of the S-Class Exam’s second task for him and Loke or playing along Ultear’s plans in order to catch her off-guard.
Gray used to be rather prone to self-sacrifice, most likely due the events surrounding Ur's death (during the Galuna Island Arc, he attempts to use Iced Shell twice, the first time to stop Lyon, the second to protect everyone else), however since being told off by Natsu, he has come to value his own life as much as he does that of his friends ("I swore I would never use that magic again. No matter what kind of will Ur has... I have my own will. I want to walk the path where I can live with my comrades!"). Even though he was almost at the point of using Iced Shell on his father Silver (whom he believed to be Deliora at that point Due Reasons), Gray came to remember the people he holds important in time to use his attempts at Iced Shell as a decoy and defeat Silver through an alternative method.
Even so... for all his levelheadedness, Gray still has a hell of a temper: Insult his guild or threaten his comrades and he just might throw all care away and just attack with all he has got – any enemy of the guild is an enemy of his and will not be shown mercy.
Gray tends to be somewhat insightful when it comes to his friends – he is quick to realize just how the Tower of Heaven must be affecting Erza and that he and Natsu have to support her and remind her that the guild is her family. He appeared rather oblivious to Juvia’s crush on him initially, but has come to describe it as “complicated business” that he’d rather avoid while discussing the triangle situation between Juvia, Lyon and himself. While he doesn’t appear to return Juvia’s feelings for him at this point (or is at very least not yet willing to admit to them), he still considers her a close and important guild mate.
All in all, Gray is a pretty nice guy - serious, but friendly and welcoming towards newcomers in their guild, creative in his use of magic, sometimes rude, sarcastic and quick to annoy or anger (especially when Natsu is involved), absolutely loyal and as much a dork as the rest of his guild, considering that he doesn't even notice that he has stripped himself down to his underwear until it’s pointed out to him.
Abilities:
In the Fairy Tail Universe, there are several types of magic, but most of them share the same attributes: every mage only has a certain amount of magic power, which decreases with use and takes time to recover again (Natsu/Lucy/Gray/Erza are all showing needing several days to probably a week to properly recover fully from injuries and their loss of magic after major battles). Additionally all mages seem to be able to sense magic power to various extends.
While Gray has much magic power to call on (as much as Erza and Natsu respectively), after long battles (especially if there was more than one without any chance to take a break and rest) he tends to run out of it, leaving him unable to call upon any magic until it is restored again – though his limits have greatly increased since Ultear released his Second Origin.
Showing all signs of a typical Shonen hero, Gray proves to be extremely agile, strong and durable - often lasting beyond his limits in a fight and even able to take out four lightning lacrima and deal with the backlash after being defeated by Bixlow not much of an hour before that. He has shown to be an expert in hand-to-hand combat and doesn't necessarily need to use magic in order to take out non- or weak mages. He is also very capable in his use of his various weapons - he is just as competent with swords and axes as he is with cannons, bazookas or bow and arrow.
As much of a Shonen hero Gray might be, he still has physical limits (although they are rather stretched). He bleeds when wounded, gets exhausted, often just stubborn enough to keep himself from collapsing on the spot until he has won the fight.
→ Ice Make: Gray’s magic, Ice Make, is a form of Molding Magic, which is essentially elemental creation magic. Ice-Make allows Gray to create ice out of nothing and shape it to his will. Gray specializes in Static Ice-Make and shapes his ice to inanimate objects such as several forms of weapons, shields, cages, ect. He is able to form pretty much any shape or make ice copies with the exact same proportions after only seeing the object once. While his magic is usually activated by certain hand movements, it also appears to be tied to his emotions – there are several instances where he freezes the air around himself in anger. His ice appears to be more durable than normal ice and he has been shown able to freeze other fluids such as blood (though he needs to freeze that fluid; he can't create it out of nothing). His training with Ur has also left him pretty much unaffected by almost any temperature except very, very great heat.
Gray has been noted for several times over the series for the speed of his shaping – he’s earned a commendation from the regional guild masters on it, and when put on the spot against Rufus Lohr, he was able to speed up his shaping to the point where the other was unable to memorize it anymore.
Next to the basic Freeze ability, which allows Gray to freeze anything he touches, and the more complex Ice-Make magic, Gray is also able to use Iced Shell, a powerful and extremely dangerous spell that turns the user's body into ice and allows them to seal their target for all eternity at the cost of their life. However Gray has sworn never to consider using it again, as he would rather live with his comrades than cause them sorrow by sacrificing himself.
While Gray's Ice Magic is very durable and equal to Natsu's Fire, it is most likely to melt when pitched against someone with stronger fire magic than Natsu. But even though it is very durable, all Gray's ice is vulnerable to the effects of other people's magic - it softened through Sugar Boy's Rosa Espada in Edolas and disappeared when Ultear used the Arc of Time on it (since she uses her magic to fast forward time until it has melted). The only notable exception to this is ice made of blood, since most magic in Fairy Tail cannot directly affect anything living.
Also, as a result of the Sun Village arc, Gray has learned how to absorb other people’s ice magic and reshape or dispel it by channeling it through his body.
Using Ice Devil Slayer, Gray is able to freeze his surroundings with a mere wave of his arm; while facing Tempesta he froze three twisters without appearing even remotely challenged and then took him down with one strike.
All Slayer-type mages can power up and/or restore their magic power by eating their respective element though it mustn't be self-produced. It can be assumed that this applies to Gray too.
Other: I'm taking Gray from a point shortly before he gains Ice Devil Slayer, but added the ability for sake of completion (and also because I might quite possibly canon update to a point where he does have it). |D
But yeah. As of now Devil Slayer is not a thing yet.
Also, Gray sometimes pulls out cloths out of no where, so he may or may not be capable of some very basic form of requip magic. It mostly appears in correlation with his stripping habit and is played for laughs, so yeah... just mentioning it here to be safe?
